While in Florida, we spent a lot of time with the in-law’s neighbour who has a crazy thick drawl. It was during one of his fishing lessons with the kids that he pulled out a strange looking beer from his cooler and said “I ain’t had a San Magoo in ages. Gawd love Maria (his cleaning lady) for grabbing me one.”
Having never seen it before I asked to take a look-see. San Miguel Brewery… The Philippines. COOL! I asked to take a pull and he gladly offered me a bottle. It was strange… wasn’t really cold and was stored in a tiny stubby bottle that I haven’t seen in a long time. The taste was not undelicious but it wasn’t great. Then I heard the story of why he likes it so much.
Turns out the “ages” he was talking about was around 1972 and the where was Vietnam. Turns out he’s a vet. Had no idea. Story goes, they had very little alcohol over there so when they would get “care” packages dropped off via helicopter every month, they included a case of two of the cheapest swill they could find. These guys lived for this stuff.
It was awesome to sit there, drink the same beer he did back in the war and listen to his stories. Can’t wait to go back next year.
