When we go to the States, I always look for the seasonal Sam Adams packs. They make the best samplers, 6 beers, 2 of each. Perfect for sharing between Mark and I. Of course, there is always their Boston Lager in each set, but it doesn’t suck, so it’s win-win.
This one I grabbed after dinner (if pizza can really be called that) as a nice digestif. We poured it out half expecting it to look like cherry Coke.. and that’s exactly what we got; dark red with a brown tinge. It smelled like cherry Coke and booze!. The first taste was an equal amount of cherry Coke and booze (sense a trend?).
Mark and I discussed and we feel this is the best description of how it tastes at first:
It tastes like those cognac filled chocolate candies your grandmother use to have, and one year, you were brave and snuck one and regretted it immediately.
When it got a little warmer it tasted a little more like chocolate, which was nice, but I wasn’t totally sold on the addition of cherry. Wait..what’s that? The label says that this is based on their chocolate bock…..
I must find that!
