Rogue Day 2.0 is in full swing now. With Beard Beer being talked about as a 2014 Top 10, we are riding a Rogue wave of euphoria. Next up Hazelnut Brown Nectar
Crap! I have not had great luck with nut brown beers. I am generally underwhelmed by them, not hating the style, but they never thrill me. Newcastle, Downtown Brown, Nut Brown Ale, Madura, all being just OK in my books (some more OK than others). Will this beer derail my Rogue Day 2.0 thrill ride?
Not a chance! This is why I will always try a beer, even if it is not a style that I gravitate to naturally. Hazelnut Brown Nectar is easily the best brown I have ever had. It was light, refreshing and very drinkable. The ‘nut’ flavor was not overpowering and tasted authentic. I would still drink other styles of beer before this one given the choice, but at least I know there are really good nut brown ales out there.
After Beard Beer, I was sure that there was not going to be anything else in the fridge that would wow me. Next up was a nut brown, which are OK, but I usually like to drink brown with food, not because it’s next on the list. I find them heavy and too malty to just drink for beers sake.
This poured out brown and smelled like Nutella, which is a good indication of goodness, as we’ve seen before. It tasted like a solid brown, malty ale, not too dry and not too sweet, but from out of nowhere, this big hit of hazelnuts. It rounded out the beer beautifully.
Beer, Nutella, earthy nut flavours….it all just works. Then again, this is Rogue we’re talking about, they can combine anything with beer and make it good.
