My parents went to the east coast and they asked me if I wanted them to pick me up some beer while they were there. Of course I said yes. Popping into the local liquor store would be cool; they would have a great selection of local beers. But my parents, they took it one step further. They tracked down actual breweries and went to them. My parents! Who, up until a few years ago, had never even been in a beer store!
This brewery is in Tupper Lake, NY, which they went through on their way to Nova Scotia (more on that later). They went to a liquor store and asked for the best local beer. The guy there didn’t sell them anything, instead, he pointed them in the direction of the micro brewery. When they got there, they walked in and there was one guy, with a majestic beard. I later told them that he MUST have been the brewmaster, since it’s a law, I think, that they must have beards.
Anywho, they don’t actually bottle their beers, they only have kegs and growlers, and they don’t have a set price either. The day they were there, the brewery only had two beers ready, this and their pumpkin ale. Mom decided on this since there was that one time I had a pumpkin beer and didn’t like it (she should read her son’s blog more, I LOVE pumpkin beers).
I knew nothing about the beer, since it was in an unlabelled growler, so I emailed them and asked what to expect. They responded to me within an hour, letting me know its ABV and IBU, what hops and malts they used and what flavour profile you could expect. My favourite line was “smoked goodness”.
This half growler poured out so dark red that it looked almost brown. It smelled like smoke…liquid smoke to be precise. The last time we had a beer that smelled like that, we didn’t finish it, so we had low expectations.
It tasted, at first, like a simple amber with a little smoke added to the brew. Then it hit the back of your throat and the smoke took over. After a while, after you let if go down, all you could taste in your mouth was the most amazing smoked bacon flavour, ever. I crap you not, this beer tasted like smoked bacon. It was amazing. At least Mark and I thought so, Jackie gave hers to Mark.
This is a fantastic brew from a tiny micro brewery that anyone in that region should look into.
