Every year, the in-laws head south in October, not to return again until the snow melts in April sometime. This year, however, they had a wedding in Ottawa they had to go to in January, so back at Thanksgiving in October, we all decided to have our family Christmas when they come back. So, if you are keeping track, that’s now three Christmases we did this year.
The day came when they landed in Deetroyit (spelled phonetically how they saw it) and got a rental car to drive home to the -21°C weather. They must have cursed the whole way back. The next night was Tuesday, 2-for-1 pizza night at Domino’s, and that’s when we decided to hold our gathering. We started off the night with some ‘za and a few Coors Lights and a few regular Keith’s, then decided it was time for some fun beers.
There wasn’t much left of the Michigan beer run beers, but there were two of these. We have tried some really good Ommegang beers in the past year, especially the Game of Thrones beer. We expected this one to be just as good.
As usual, it was a harvest ale, so wheaty and saisony. It was full of gunk on the bottom, so we poured out slowly as to not disturb the yeast. We thought we were being super smart, until I read the label and that’s exactly what it said to do. It was a clear yellow colour and it smelled like a grainy saison. It tasted like a light, smooth saison. Like some of the others we’ve had, but this one had a flavour that was more creamy and had a rye booty. That was nice.
So far, so good. Can’t wait for the next trip to the States. I think this time it will be to Premier Gourmet in NY. Heard great things about that place.
