A beer based on my favourite kind of jam? Oh hells yes! I love elderberry jam, you just can’t find it in too many places these days, and Ma doesn’t make it anymore. So when we saw this mixer pack at Wal-Mart and I read, at the time, Elder Berry Weisse, I was kinda excited. I figured it would actually not be that good, since a lot of fruit weisse beers aren’t great.
As the second beer of lets-drink-a-lot-of-beer Saturday, I thought, might as well get it out of the way early so we can follow up with some good ones. We decided to just drink it rustic style, straight from the bottle. I kinda wished I had poured it out, I hope it’s purple! In the bottle, once you get past the obligatory musky smell, you get sweet wheat and fruit smells. There is a hint of elderberry there, which is promising. It tasted like a mellow wheat beer with a splash of generic fruit flavour. You couldn’t distinguish the elder from the berry, but it was still tasty. Except for the end. It had gotten a little too warm and turned sour. Poor Julie still had half a bottle left when Mark and I finished ours and made horrific faces. She toughed it out though…and missed the next two beers.
Again, this was part of a summer pack, so it would have been much, much better in the hot sun, and not in two feet of snow.
