One of the things that I look forward to when we go to Florida every year is the new offerings from Sam Adams and Leinenkugel. These two breweries seem to have about 1,000 different beers between them. This year, however, I only managed to find one new Leiney.
The bottle said it was hoppy, the name says it’s hoppy, even the label depicts that whats inside is hoppy. I was excited. I kinda like hops. But what is this Helles style they made? I looked it up on my new favourite site BeerWikia.com and it’s just a German pale lager. Kinda like pilsner, but lager. Turns out, I’ve had a few of these before and didn’t even know it! While I was looking it up, I came across an introduction video from Leinenkugel introducing Hoppin Helles hosted by the brewer himself. Have a look.
It did pour out a light orange colour, but my head was nowhere near as big as his was. I can attribute that to draught vs. bottle. I could definitely smell some hops in there, more simcoe than anything else. But what did I taste? Not the blast of hops that was advertised, but lager and spice. It smelled like hops but didn’t taste like it. It’s like Pizza chips, they smell like pizza but, honestly, don’t taste like one that I would ever eat!
So sad. I was looking forward to a hoppy Leiney
