Last year, I heard that there was a brewery in the States that was commissioned by HBO to make a series of beers based on Game of Thrones (only the best show on TV right now). At the time I thought, how the hell will they pull that off? And even more, where can I get some?!
Turns out, the first beer, Iron Throne, was never, EVER in Canada, so I just kinda forgot about it. Then this past fall, when the second one came out, Take the Black Stout, I read about it and pined for a bottle for a week, then forgot about that too. Then I heard some rumours that it was available at the LCBO. You can imagine how excited I was. Only problem… couldn’t find it anywhere I went. So when Jackie was coming back from Toronto one weekend, she “decided” to stop in for dinner and a beer before going home. Turns out, she and the wife were in cahoots about getting this beer. Sneaky….but awesome.
We were all ready to pour it out when I thought it would be a good idea to read the label. Should not have done that. “Beer brewed with star anise and licorice root”. Dear lord, two things I hate! This is going to suck, and I was so excited for it too. We decided to drink it anyways, because beer! It was very dark and had a chocolate brown head. It smelled like hops and kinda like a saison, with that wheat like aroma, kinda like Noir de Chambly.
We hesitantly tried it and we were both shocked. Shocked I say, that it was actually good. It had a smoked stoutiness to it, plus a wheat beer backing and only the slightest hint of licorice. It was so good, I didn’t want Jackie to have anymore.
I tried finding another bottle, but the closest LCBO that has it is 85km away. Not worth that trip.
If anyone knows how/where to get Iron Throne…let me know, I’d love to try it.
