A few weeks back when we were in TO to see a show at Soulpepper Theatre, we met up with Kevin and Teri (who works for Soulpepper), at Mill Street Brew Pub for a bite. I was joking that they should commission Mill Street to make a pepper beer for them. Little did I know, there was one out there already. When I saw that Short Straw was brewed with white pepper, I let Teri know that I may have found their beer “mascot”.
It poured out amber in colour and smelled like…nothing really. It didn’t have much head and there was no immediate smell other than beer. I thought that maybe it was past its prime, but the box said “best if enjoyed by March 2014”. Lots of time left.
Up front it tasted kinda malty….and then it hit you. Pepper. Actual pepper taste. It was actually kinda nice. I liked the hint of spice in the booty, it really set off the rest of the beer. I really REALLY, enjoyed it. Mark, not so much. He had about half of it and then decided he was done for the night. They went home and he didn’t get out of bed for three days.
Totally has nothing to do with the beer. For serious.
