Now that I’m just about on the other side of sober, David thought it was best to break out some Trappist beers. He gave me the choice of Chimay White or Achel 8 Bruin. Not having had the latter, I chose it. Of the 7 or 8 official Trappist brewers, this new one brings me up to 5 I think.
Dinner was on the table outside and it was quite the spread: burgers, sausage, corn on the cob, baked potatoes, garlic bread, squeaky cheese. I ate like a king that night! Good thing too, since if you were to add up the ABV of the last three beers, it would equal 28!
I poured this out into a fancy Duvel goblet. It was very brown and flat. The smell was all booze. Unfortunately, there really wasn’t much to say about this beer that hasn’t been said before about Chimay, or la Trappe. Either you like the style or you don’t.
They all pretty much taste the same to someone who doesn’t drink them exclusively….like monks.
